Arusha, is also known as "A" Town or R-Chuga by the locals, is situated at the base of Mount Meru, the second highest mountain in Tanzania and the fifth in Africa.
Arusha is served by two airports. Kilimanjaro International Airport ( JRO) has flights to Amsterdam with KLM, and to Addis Ababa, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and Nairobi. Kilimanjaro Airport is approximately 60km from Arusha city center.
Arusha Municipal Airport (ARK) is on the outskirts of the city but only runs domestic flights, mostly to Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, and charters. air viva offers regular flights between Arusha and Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and Kilimanjaro.
Lake Manyara National Park offers enormous topographical variety and abundant wildlife for its relatively manageable range of approximately 300 square kilometers, making it superb for a day trip safari. On the savannah plains, you may spot giraffe, troops of baboon, zebra, ostrich, elephant, bushbuck, aardvarks and the occasional lions on the tree and leopard, while the lake is the home of over 400 species of birds such as shrikes, geese, hornbills, lesser and greater flamingoes, ibis and kingfishers. Ngorongoro Crater is just one part of the 8300 sq. kilometer area called the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA). Tarangire National Park is one of the finest parks in Tanzania. Located in the Rift Valley, not far from the eastern shore of Lake Manyara, Tarangire covers approximately 2600 square kilometers and contains nine different vegetation zones, each supporting distinct types of wildlife. The expansive landscape of Tarangire is panoramic and soothing as the wooded savannas stretch far and wide in every direction. At the beginning of the dry season in the Serengeti end of June, the herds of wildebeest start heading to northern Serengeti around Lobo area and Kogatende where the grass is green. From July to September, migration safaris hold the excitement of herds crossing the Mara River. As the animals enter the water, individuals are taken by crocodiles.
