But which path will lead you to the summit?

Let's explore the seven distinct Kilimanjaro routes

And find the perfect adventure tailored to your desires.

The Seven Routes to Kilimanjaro:
A Route for Every Adventurer

Kilimanjaro offers seven established routes...

Each with its own unique charm and challenges.

Six routes ascend from the southern slopes, while one offers a northern approach:

  • Northern Circuit Route: A lengthy, scenic adventure.

  • Lemosho Route: Known for its stunning vistas and high success rate.

  • Shira Route: A high-altitude start with breathtaking views.

  • Machame Route ("Whiskey" Route): A challenging yet rewarding climb.

  • Rongai Route: The tranquil northern approach.

  • Marangu Route ("Coca-Cola" Route): The only route with hut accommodations.

  • Umbwe Route: A steep, demanding climb for experienced trekkers.

Which Route Suits Your Adventure Style?

At Shrike Safaris, we understand that every traveler seeks a unique experience. Here's our expert guidance to help you choose the best route:

For the Highest Summit Success:

The 9-day Northern Circuit, 8-day Lemosho, and 7-day Machame routes offer the highest success rates due to better acclimatization and a more gradual ascent.

For the Most Scenic Views:

The Lemosho Route provides unparalleled panoramic vistas, showcasing Kilimanjaro's breathtaking beauty.

For Tranquility and Seclusion:

The Rongai Route offers a serene wilderness experience, away from the crowds.

For the Ultimate Challenge:

For those looking for a truly unique and wild experience, ask us about options that include Crater Camp. Less than 1% of climbers get to experience this.

Accommodation

The Marangu Route is the only option with hut accommodation—ideal for those who prefer to avoid camping. However, the huts are basic and can be noisy.

Summit Night Difficulty

The Machame and Lemosho routes have the easiest summit night, reaching the crater at Stella Point, just an hour from Uhuru Peak. Rongai and Marangu routes reach the crater rim farther away, making summit day longer and more exhausting.
