Some Journeys Begin With a Purpose

For the HTCNE team, Tanzania isn't just another destination on the map.

Each year, surgeons, physicians, nurses, and medical professionals travel to Bugando Medical Centre in Mwanza, working alongside Tanzanian colleagues to perform complex surgeries, share knowledge, and strengthen local medical care.

The days begin early.

They finish late.

Every decision matters.

Every patient has a story.

By the time their work is complete, the team has given everything they came to give.

Only then does another journey begin.

Not another mission.

A chance to simply breathe again.

Four Days to Be Together

Twenty-one colleagues left Mwanza behind and headed toward the Serengeti.

There were no operating schedules to keep.

No hospital corridors.

No pagers.

No urgent decisions waiting around the next corner.

For the first time in days, conversations weren't about surgery.

They were about families.

Home.

The excitement of seeing Africa's wildlife for the first time.

And the familiar smile waiting to welcome them back.

Chacha.

This wasn't their first safari together, and it wasn't his first time guiding them.

Over the years, he had become more than a guide.

He had become part of the tradition.

Whenever the team returned to Tanzania, they always hoped Chacha would be waiting.

He always was.

Nature Set the Pace

The further north they travelled, the quieter everything became.

The endless plains stretched toward the horizon.

Acacia trees stood alone beneath wide African skies.

There was nowhere else they needed to be.

Then came one of Africa's greatest wildlife spectacles.

Thousands of wildebeest gathered along the banks of the Mara River.

Some hesitated.

Others surged forward.

Within moments, the river exploded into movement.

Dust filled the air.

Water churned beneath hundreds of pounding hooves.

No one spoke.

Not because there was nothing to say.

Because there was nothing anyone wanted to interrupt.

For a team accustomed to making life-changing decisions every day, this was one of the rare moments where the only thing left to do was watch.

The Celebration Nobody Expected

That evening, everyone gathered for dinner.

The day seemed to be ending like any other.

Then the lights dimmed.

From somewhere beyond the dining area came singing.

Camp staff appeared carrying a birthday cake.

Earlier that day, Catherine had quietly mentioned to the Shrike team that it was Dr. Manoj Abraham's birthday.

Without a word to him, everyone had planned a surprise.

Manoj looked around the table, smiling in complete disbelief as the singing grew louder.

His colleagues joined in.

The camp staff sang.

Chacha stood nearby, smiling just as broadly.

There were no speeches.

No grand ceremony.

Just one unforgettable moment shared among people who had spent the previous week caring for others.

For one evening, everyone else took care of him.

Sometimes the most meaningful luxury isn't something you buy.

It's feeling genuinely seen.

A Tradition Built on Trust

This wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime safari.

It had quietly become an annual tradition.

Each year, after completing their work at Bugando Medical Centre, the HTCNE team chooses to spend four days exploring northern Tanzania together.

Each year, they hope Chacha is available.

Each year, they leave with new stories.

Different wildlife.

Different conversations.

Different memories.

The Serengeti is never the same.

Perhaps that's why they keep coming back.

Looking Forward

Before anyone boarded a plane home, the conversations had already begun.

"When are we coming back?"

Not because another safari was already planned.

Because another medical mission would bring them back to Mwanza.

And when that happened, everyone already knew how they wanted to celebrate the end of another meaningful week.

Together.

In the Serengeti.

The Tradition Continued

The following year, another member of the same medical mission, Dr. Hugh Pratt, returned to Tanzania—this time with his family.

After completing the mission, he chose to experience the Serengeti together with those closest to him.

When he arrived home, he wrote:

"Flights were fine, but not even close to the wonderful, amazing experience we had on our safari. It really was probably one of the most amazing experiences of our lives. Zachariah was great, and, of course, Chacha is unequivocally awesome. He is an amazing person. We will never forget the experience."

He later shared this review:

For this community of medical professionals, it has become something else entirely.
